About
Walnut leaf — a tannin- and juglone-rich astringent herbal. Traditional and effective but carries a real allergen and staining risk.
Juglans regia (English walnut) leaf contains condensed tannins, flavonoids, and juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone). In cosmetics it is used as an astringent, skin conditioning, and hair-tinting ingredient; juglone is the key pigment and also a documented contact allergen and sensitizer. EU CosIng lists the leaf without specific restriction but juglone is monitored. Persons with walnut tree-nut allergy should avoid topical walnut-derived products; dark staining of skin and fabric is common.
