A serine protease enzyme (CAS 9001-01-8). Biologically active — useful for exfoliation but raises barrier/irritation concerns if misused.

Kallikrein (CAS 9001-01-8) is a family of serine proteases; in skin biology kallikreins 5 and 7 regulate desquamation, and their overactivity is implicated in Netherton syndrome and atopic dermatitis. As a cosmetic ingredient, applied kallikrein is marketed for gentle enzymatic turnover. Because active proteases can disrupt barrier proteins (corneodesmosomes), misformulation or elevated activity carries a real risk of stinging, redness and impaired barrier function. Historically sourced from porcine pancreas; recombinant and synthetic versions exist. No specific EU restriction, but kallikrein-type proteases are treated cautiously by CIR and formulators.
