About
Silica micro-spicules from freshwater sponge — creates micro-channels in skin. Potent exfoliation with real irritation and down-time risks.
Spongilla lacustris spicule is a powder of siliceous micro-needles from the freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris. When massaged into skin it creates transient micro-channels via mechanical action (a form of micro-needling). It is used in professional peels and some leave-in treatments to enhance penetration of other actives. Side effects — stinging, burning, erythema, post-treatment sensitivity and short-term inflammation — are expected rather than rare; use in rosacea, active acne, eczema or sensitive skin is contraindicated. Powder format poses an inhalation risk.
