About

An ethoxylated lauryl alcohol — a mild non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier that helps products foam and keeps oil-water mixtures stable.

Laureth-6 (CAS 3055-96-7 / 68439-50-9) is a polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol with 6 moles of ethylene oxide. It functions as a non-ionic surfactant, emulsifier, and solubiliser. The CIR Expert Panel reviewed laureth compounds and found them safe as used in cosmetics, noting low irritation potential compared to anionic surfactants. As with all ethoxylated ingredients, 1,4-dioxane contamination must be controlled through manufacturing purification processes. Laureth compounds with moderate ethoxylation degrees (4-10) offer a good balance of emulsification and skin mildness.

Skin benefits

  • Mild cleansing action
  • Stable emulsification
  • Good skin tolerance for a surfactant

Known concerns

  • Potential 1,4-dioxane contamination from ethoxylation
  • May cause mild irritation in rinse-off products at high concentrations
  • Enhanced skin penetration for co-formulated ingredients
