About
A dodecyl-trimethyl quaternary ammonium salt paired with 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, essentially functioning as a triclosan-class antimicrobial preservative with significant regulatory concerns.
This ingredient is a salt formed between laurtrimonium cation (C12 chain) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxide anion. The chlorophenol moiety is a known chlorinated biocide structurally related to banned Triclosan (Annex II, entry 1384). 2,4,5-trichlorophenol is listed in CosIng Annex III as a restricted phenol. Triclosan itself is banned in cosmetic rinse-off products in the EU under Commission Regulation 2017/745. This score reflects severe EU regulatory concern and CMR category signals.
Skin benefits
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservation
- Effective against gram-positive bacteria at low concentrations
Known concerns
- CMR category concern — trichlorophenols are under EU scrutiny for carcinogenicity/mutagenicity
- Triclosan-class biocide — banned in rinse-off cosmetics in EU
- Skin sensitization and endocrine disruption potential
- Environmental persistence of chlorinated phenoxy compounds
