About

An ethoxylated coconut-derived surfactant — milder than standard sulfates, used in cleansers and shampoos for foam and cleaning. Gentler on skin than SLS.

Magnesium Coceth Sulfate is an anionic surfactant formed from ethoxylated coconut fatty alcohols, sulfated and neutralised with magnesium. The ethoxylation step reduces irritation potential compared to non-ethoxylated sulfates like SLS. The magnesium counterion further reduces irritancy versus sodium salts. Used in shampoos, body washes, and facial cleansers. No GHS hazards or specific EU restrictions.

Skin benefits

  • Effective cleansing with good foam
  • Milder than sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Magnesium salt reduces irritation potential

Known concerns

  • Surfactant — can strip natural oils with overuse
  • May contain trace 1,4-dioxane from ethoxylation
  • Can irritate very sensitive or eczema-prone skin
