About

Methyl Isocyanate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Methyl isocyanate (MIC) is a highly reactive isocyanate compound infamous for the 1984 Bhopal industrial disaster. It is classified under EU CLP Regulation as Acute Toxic (Cat. 1) for inhalation, H330 Fatal if inhaled, and H334 May cause allergy or asthma symptoms if inhaled. It is listed in EU Annex II (reference not specified — prohibited substances list) and categorically cannot appear in cosmetic products. Any detection would constitute a serious regulatory violation.

Known concerns

  • EU Annex II prohibited substance — absolute ban in cosmetics
  • Acute inhalation toxicity classification (AT Cat. 1)
  • Respiratory sensitiser — may cause severe allergic reactions
  • Highly reactive chemical — instability in cosmetic formulations
  • Responsible for mass casualty events in industrial settings
