About

A morpholine derivative used in some cosmetic applications but raising concerns due to morpholine's potential to form carcinogenic nitrosamines.

Morpholine, phosphate is a salt of morpholine (a cyclic secondary amine) with phosphoric acid. The primary concern with morpholine-containing compounds is their potential to form N-nitrosomorpholine, a known carcinogen, particularly in acidic conditions or when co-formulated with nitrosating agents. While the phosphate salt may reduce free morpholine availability, it is not a commonly used cosmetic ingredient and lacks comprehensive safety assessment data under EU Regulation 1223/2009.

Skin benefits

  • May function as a pH adjuster in specific formulations

Known concerns

  • Morpholine can form carcinogenic N-nitrosamines
  • Limited cosmetic safety assessment data
  • Potential respiratory irritant as fine powder
