About
A mixed fatty acid alkanolamide used as a surfactant and foam booster, with some concern around nitrosamine formation.
This ingredient is a mixture of C14/C16/C20 alkanolamides (monoethanolamine derivatives) used as nonionic surfactants and foam boosters in rinse-off products. Under EU cosmetics regulation, alkanolamides can be restricted where they may react to form nitrosamines (NDELA), which are carcinogenic. The SCCS has expressed concern about MEA-derived alkanolamides in cosmetic formulations stored over time at elevated temperatures.
Skin benefits
- Functions as a surfactant and emulsifier in cosmetic formulations
- Contributes to foaming and cleansing performance
Known concerns
- Potential nitrosamine (NDELA) formation during product storage or under use conditions (EU SCCS concern)
- EU REACH Annex XVII restricts secondary amine derivatives that can form nitrosamines
- May cause mild skin or eye irritation in some individuals
