About
A solvent-refined light petroleum naphtha containing benzene above 0.1% w/w, prohibited for cosmetic use under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 due to carcinogenic aromatic content.
Light solvent-refined naphtha is extracted using polar solvents to remove aromatics, but benzene removal to below 0.1% is not assured by the standard solvent refining process. The light naphtha matrix is predominantly C5-C7 hydrocarbons. Residual aromatic content and the benzene conditional trigger place this stream in EU Annex II prohibited status for cosmetic products, regardless of the quality of the solvent refinement.
Known concerns
- Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
- Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
- Residual aromatic content from incomplete dearomatization
- Solvent residues (NMP or furfural) from refining process
- Flammable light hydrocarbon stream
