About

The single most common skin allergen in Europe and a Group 1 carcinogen. Prohibited from cosmetics — its only legitimate presence is as a trace impurity in pigments.

Nickel sulphate (CAS 7786-81-4) is the reference allergen for nickel contact dermatitis — the most prevalent contact allergy in the EU and North America (roughly 15-20% of adult women patch-test positive). Nickel compounds collectively are IARC Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans) based on respiratory cancer evidence in occupational cohorts. EU CLP harmonised classification includes Carc. 1A (H350i), Muta. 2, Repr. 1B (H360D), Resp. Sens. 1, Skin Sens. 1, and STOT RE 1. Because the EU Cosmetics Regulation automatically prohibits CMR Category 1A/1B substances (Annex II by reference), nickel sulphate has no legitimate cosmetic use. The only permitted nickel presence is as a trace impurity in colour pigments, controlled by good-manufacturing-practice limits.
