About
A plant-produced version of human IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor) — targets skin aging by promoting cell growth. Powerful biotech ingredient with safety questions.
This is a 68-amino acid fusion peptide of Octapeptide-30 with recombinant human Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), produced in Nicotiana benthamiana via molecular farming. IGF-1 is a potent growth factor that stimulates cell proliferation and differentiation. In skincare, it targets aging by promoting collagen synthesis and keratinocyte renewal. However, IGF-1 has stronger associations with cancer risk than EGF — elevated serum IGF-1 levels are epidemiologically linked to increased breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer risk. While topical application likely results in minimal systemic absorption, this remains a concern.
Function
Skin benefits
- Potent cell renewal stimulation
- May promote collagen synthesis
- Anti-aging effects on fine lines and wrinkles
- Hair growth stimulation potential
Known concerns
- IGF-1 has established epidemiological links to cancer risk
- Growth factors may promote tumor development in predisposed individuals
- Novel biotechnology ingredient with very limited safety data
- Systemic absorption through skin is poorly characterized
