About

Nicotine and its salts is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Nicotine is a pyridine alkaloid found in nightshade plants (especially tobacco) with potent stimulant and vasoconstrictive properties. It is classified as an acute toxic substance (category 2, H300+H310 fatal if swallowed or absorbed through skin) under CLP. The EU Cosmetics Regulation prohibits it from cosmetic products entirely — there is no permitted use level. Nicotine has been used in 'anti-aging' or 'skin tightening' formulations but these uses are illegal in the EU. Its transdermal absorption combined with cardiovascular effects makes it wholly incompatible with cosmetic safety requirements.

Known concerns

  • EU Annex II/III prohibited substance — banned in all cosmetic products
  • Severe acute toxicity: fatal if swallowed or absorbed through skin (H300, H310)
  • Cardiovascular toxicity — vasoconstriction, hypertension, arrhythmia risk
  • Highly addictive with neurological effects
  • No safe cosmetic use case established
