About
A mid-range ethoxylated variant restricted in EU cosmetics because the nonylphenyl component can generate endocrine-disrupting nonylphenol, with moderate aquatic toxicity concerns.
Nonoxynol-25 is a polyethylene glycol mono(4-nonylphenyl) ether with an average of 25 ethylene oxide units, placing it in the mid-to-high ethoxylation range. Its endocrine disruption risk from nonylphenol generation is lower than lower-ethoxylated variants but not negligible. EU REACH Annex XVII entry 46a applies to all nonylphenol ethoxylates regardless of chain length, restricting their use in cosmetic products within the European Union.
Known concerns
- EU REACH Annex XVII restriction in cosmetic products
- Endocrine disruption via nonylphenyl degradation
- Aquatic toxicity
- Environmental persistence
