About

This low ethoxylated Nonoxynol is a known endocrine disruptor precursor due to its nonylphenyl structure, and its use in cosmetics is prohibited under EU REACH regulations.

Nonoxynol-6 is an ethoxylated nonylphenyl ether with an average of 6 ethylene oxide units. Its low ethoxylation degree makes it sufficiently lipophilic to accumulate in biological membranes and to degrade to nonylphenol. The SCCS (EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) has expressed concern regarding nonylphenol ethoxylates in cosmetic products, and REACH Annex XVII (entry 46a) restricts the entire series, including Nonoxynol-6, from cosmetic use within the EU.

Known concerns

  • Category 1 endocrine disruptor (via nonylphenol)
  • EU Annex XVII ban in cosmetic products
  • Aquatic toxicity
  • Bioaccumulation potential
  • Degradation to nonylphenol
