About
This low ethoxylated Nonoxynol is strongly associated with endocrine disruption through nonylphenol degradation and is prohibited in EU cosmetic products under REACH Annex XVII.
Nonoxynol-8 is a nonionic surfactant of the ethoxylated nonylphenyl ether class with an average of 8 ethylene oxide units. It occupies the lower ethoxylation range where significant degradation to nonylphenol occurs, conferring endocrine-disrupting properties. The EU SCCS has flagged nonylphenol ethoxylates as substances of concern in cosmetics, and EU REACH Annex XVII (entry 46a) bans their use in cosmetic formulations. Its aquatic toxicity and bioaccumulation potential are well documented.
Known concerns
- Category 1 endocrine disruptor potential (via nonylphenol)
- EU Annex XVII ban in cosmetic products
- Aquatic toxicity
- Bioaccumulation potential
- Degradation to nonylphenol
