About
An ethoxylated oleyl alcohol (11 EO units) functioning as a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier, commonly used in combination with other surfactants to stabilise and thicken formulations.
Oleth-11 is a polyethylene glycol ether of oleyl alcohol (a monounsaturated C18 fatty alcohol). The EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC 1223/2009) lists Oleth compounds in the positive inventory without restriction. These are among the milder nonionic surfactants. As with all ethoxylated ingredients, residual 1,4-dioxane must be monitored per SCCS guidance. Oleth-11 is widely used in emulsion-based skincare and is considered safe for both rinse-off and leave-on applications.
Skin benefits
- Acts as an effective emulsifier and stabiliser in skincare products
- Contributes to smooth, uniform product texture
Known concerns
- 1,4-dioxane residual requires monitoring per SCCS
- Skin sensitisation possible in predisposed individuals but rare
