About
A synthetic 40-amino-acid peptide that conditions and improves the appearance of skin, designed for use in anti-aging and moisturizing cosmetic products.
Oligopeptide-48 is a synthetic peptide consisting of 40 amino acids including alanine, asparagine, glycine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, threonine, and valine, assembled by solid-phase peptide synthesis. Like other cosmetic oligopeptides, its large molecular weight prevents skin barrier penetration, confining its effects to the stratum corneum. It is not listed in EU Annex II (prohibited) or Annex III (restricted) under Regulation 1223/2009. Oligopeptides of this type have shown good tolerability in dermatological testing, with no significant contact sensitization signals reported.
Function
Skin benefits
- Skin conditioning properties support overall skin texture and appearance
- May stimulate production of extracellular matrix proteins through signaling at the skin surface
Known concerns
- Large molecular size limits biological activity to the skin surface
- Manufacturing quality control is essential to ensure precise sequence and purity
