P-Menthadiene is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
p-Menthadiene refers to isomers of gamma-terpinene or similar monocyclic terpenes that occur naturally in various essential oils. These compounds are subject to EU cosmetic allergen labeling requirements when present above 0.001% in leave-on products or 0.01% in rinse-off products per Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III. A significant concern is auto-oxidation: upon exposure to air, these terpenes oxidize to peroxides and hydroperoxides that are potent skin sensitizers. The SCCS recommends antioxidant protection (e.g., BHT) to prevent oxidation before consumer use, and products must carry appropriate warnings regarding oxidation-related sensitization risks.
