Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A lower molecular weight polyethylene glycol polymer used as a humectant, solvent, and skin conditioning agent in cosmetic formulations.
PEG-14 is a polyethylene glycol polymer with approximately 14 ethylene oxide units, making it smaller and more water-soluble than higher molecular weight PEGs. Lower molecular weight PEGs have a greater potential for skin penetration, which is the primary reason for its lower safety score within the PEG family. The CIR panel has assessed PEG-14 as safe for cosmetic use at current exposure levels, though it is monitored for ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane processing contaminants. Not restricted in EU cosmetics regulation.
Skin benefits
- humectant
- solvent
- skin conditioning
Known concerns
- skin absorption potential (lower molecular weight)
- ethylene oxide contamination (potential)
- 1,4-dioxane contamination (potential)
