About

A tallow-derived quaternary ammonium compound with a benzonium structure, functioning as a preservative and conditioner but carrying significant sensitisation risks.

PEG-5 tallow benzonium chloride is a benzalkonium-type (benzonium) quaternary ammonium compound derived from tallow and ethoxylated with approximately 5 moles of ethylene oxide. Benzonium chloride derivatives are known contact sensitisers and are restricted in EU Annex III for rinse-off products at a maximum of 0.1%. The PEG-5 chain adds additional concern for 1,4-dioxane contamination. Use in leave-on products is more restricted.

Skin benefits

  • Provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservation
  • Conditions hair and reduces static

Known concerns

  • Known skin and respiratory sensitiser (benzonium class)
  • Restricted in EU rinse-off products at ≤0.1%
  • Risk of 1,4-dioxane from PEG-5 chain
