About

An ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene glycol used as a thickener and film-forming agent that creates protective, moisture-sealing barriers on the skin while adding body to formulations.

PEG-65M is an extremely high molecular weight polyethylene glycol with approximately 65,000 ethylene oxide units. At this molecular size, the polymer is essentially biologically inert and cannot penetrate the skin barrier, making it one of the safest cosmetic polymer ingredients available. EU Cosmetics Regulation lists high molecular weight PEGs in Annex V as permitted viscosity-controlling agents without specific concentration restrictions, contingent on monomer purity compliance. The ingredient is also used in pharmaceutical topical formulations, further supporting its safety profile.

Skin benefits

  • Effective film-forming agent that seals moisture onto the skin surface
  • Thickening properties add luxurious body and texture to cosmetic formulations

Known concerns

  • Must meet stringent EU residual monomer purity standards
  • Raw material quality control is essential since the inert polymer itself poses no risk but its contaminants do
