About
Psyllium husk powder — a classic mucilage-forming fibre used as a humectant and mild film former. Consumer-safe; main sensitisation is occupational (handling dust).
Plantago psyllium husk powder is milled from the seed husks of Plantago ovata/psyllium, the same material used in pharmaceutical-grade bulk laxatives. In water it forms a mucilaginous gel, which in cosmetics provides hydration, film formation, and mild viscosity. Typical use is 0.1-2%. Pharma and food-grade heritage give it a high evidence level for safety as a finished consumer ingredient. The only notable sensitisation concern is well documented among workers handling large amounts of dry powder (occupational psyllium asthma) — this is not a consumer-use concern. Listed in EU CosIng; no CIR monograph but extensive broader safety documentation exists.
Skin benefits

- Very gentle on skin
- Food/pharma-grade ingredient
Known concerns
- Dust inhalation is a known occupational sensitiser — manufacturing concern, not consumer
- Requires preservation when hydrated
- Can form sticky film at high use levels
