About

A polymer-modified surfactant combining ethoxylation and propoxylation of lauryl/dodecyl alcohol, used as an emulsifier and cleanser in skin products.

PPG-4 Laureth-2 is a nonionic surfactant derived from dodecanol with approximately 2 mol ethoxylation and 4 mol propoxylation, functioning as a surfactant and emulsifier. Like other laureth surfactants, it has low acute oral and dermal toxicity. It is not restricted under EU Cosmetics Regulation. The propoxylation imparts hydrophobic character while ethoxylation provides water solubility. Similar compounds have been assessed by SCCS as safe in rinse-off and leave-on cosmetic products.

Skin benefits

  • Cleanses skin without fully stripping natural lipids
  • Stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions

Known concerns

  • Mild skin irritation possible in sensitive individuals
  • Trace 1,4-dioxane from ethoxylation
