About

An ethoxylated castor oil derivative used as a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier in cosmetics; generally well tolerated though it may cause mild irritation in sensitive skin.

RICINOLETH-40 is the polyethylene glycol (40 mol EO average) ether of ricinoleic acid, derived from castor oil. It functions as a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier in cosmetic formulations. It is not listed in EU Annex II (banned) or Annex III (restricted) substances. The high ethoxylation degree makes it relatively mild. It may contain trace residues of castor oil components; sensitization to ricinoleic acid is possible but uncommon.

Skin benefits

  • Effective nonionic emulsifier for O/W emulsions
  • Provides emollient and skin-conditioning properties

Known concerns

  • May cause mild irritation in individuals sensitive to castor oil derivatives
