About

Rosemary leaf — one of cosmetics' most reliable natural antioxidants (carnosic and rosmarinic acids). Gentle at extract level but the essential oil carries allergens.

Rosmarinus officinalis leaf provides carnosic acid, carnosol, rosmarinic acid, and volatile terpenes (1,8-cineole, camphor, alpha-pinene). In cosmetics it is used as an antioxidant, skin conditioning, and astringent ingredient; standardized rosemary extract is widely used to protect unsaturated oils from oxidation. EU CosIng lists it without restriction; EFSA has approved rosemary extract as food antioxidant E392. Essential oil (vs. extract) contains declarable fragrance allergens and in rare cases has caused allergic contact dermatitis.

Skin benefits

  • Strong antioxidant action
  • Natural formula stabilizer
  • Traditional astringent/toning

Known concerns

  • Essential oil allergen declaration
  • Occasional contact dermatitis
  • Camphor content in EO
