About
A recombinant human collagen analogue produced in silkworms, mimicking the skin-structure protein with high biocompatibility and low risk of immune reaction.
This recombinant polypeptide is expressed in silkworm (Bombyx mori) using transgenic technology and replicates the sequence of human Collagen Alpha-1. Silkworm-expressed proteins benefit from eukaryotic post-translational modification, including prolyl hydroxylation important for collagen stability. Under EU cosmetics regulation, collagen-derived ingredients are permitted without specific concentration limits; this recombinant form is not subject to the animal-derived material restrictions of Regulation (EU) No 1223/2009.
Function
Skin benefits
- Provides humectant and skin-conditioning effects
- May support extracellular matrix integrity
Known concerns
- Residual silkworm host-cell proteins may cause irritation in sensitised individuals
- Long-chain polypeptide integrity depends on fermentation and purification quality
