About

An amphoteric surfactant derived from animal tallow that is widely used in cleansers and is generally well-tolerated by skin.

Tallow Betaine is an amphoteric surfactant obtained from the amidation of tallow-derived fatty acids, commonly used in shower gels, shampoos, and facial cleansers for its foaming and cleansing properties. While derived from animal sources (tallow), it has a long history of safe use in cosmetic products. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009 it is not subject to specific restrictions beyond general cosmetic safety requirements. The main considerations are source transparency (vegetarian/vegan labeling) and ensuring the tallow is sourced from approved abattoir by-products with proper BSE/TSE certifications.

Skin benefits

  • Provides effective cleansing and foaming properties in wash-off products
  • Gentle amphoteric surfactant suitable for sensitive skin formulations

Known concerns

  • Animal-derived ingredient — may be unsuitable for vegan/vegetarian consumers
  • Tallow source quality and BSE/TSE status must be verified
