About

An ethoxylated phosphate ester surfactant derived from triolein (glycerol trioleate), used as a cleansing agent, emulsifier, and viscosity-controlling ingredient in cosmetic formulations.

Trioleeth-8 phosphate is a phosphate ester of polyethylene glycol etherified triolein, with approximately 8 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule. Phosphate esters are widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations as surfactants and emulsifiers due to their amphiphilic character and chemical stability. EU CosIng lists phosphate esters as safe for cosmetic use. The ethoxylation reduces the irritancy of the phosphate group compared to non-ethoxylated phosphate surfactants. Phosphate esters of fatty alcohols have been used in cosmetics for decades with a well-characterised safety profile.

Skin benefits

  • Effective cleansing and removal of sebum and impurities
  • Emulsification of cosmetic formulations
  • Viscosity modification improving product texture
  • Fatty acid moiety (oleic acid) provides skin barrier support

Known concerns

  • May be slightly irritating to eyes — avoid in eye-area formulations
  • Phosphate esters can increase skin penetration of co-formulated ingredients
  • Environmental concern: phosphate nutrients can contribute to eutrophication in aquatic environments
