About
A peptide from wheat, used to condition hair and skin. Mostly gentle, but documented contact-urticaria cases in wheat/gluten-allergic users.
Triticum Aestivum Peptide (CAS 100684-25-1) is a hydrolysate of wheat proteins (primarily gluten-derived glutenin and gliadin fragments) processed down to short peptides. It is used in shampoo, conditioner, and skin care for its substantivity and conditioning effect. Topical safety is generally good at 0.1-2% use, but a well-documented EU case series in the 2000s linked a specific highly-hydrolyzed wheat protein (Glupearl 19S) to contact urticaria and rare anaphylaxis in cosmetic users — SCCS and French authorities responded with guidance on molecular weight and sensitization testing. Wheat-allergic and celiac individuals may react. Most modern hydrolysates are below the implicated molecular-weight threshold.
Skin benefits
- Wheat-derived peptide hydrolysate — film-forming and conditioning
- Substantive on hair and skin
- Supplies amino acids for barrier
- Generally gentle
Known concerns
- Celiac/gluten-allergy concern for sensitive users (via ingestion or periungual/mucosal contact)
- Protein-allergy risk in wheat-allergic individuals
- Residual gluten content varies by hydrolysis level
- Case reports of contact urticaria from hydrolyzed wheat in cosmetics
