About

A UV filter historically used in sunscreen products, now significantly restricted in the EU due to endocrine disruption concerns and revised safety assessments under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.

Oxybenzone (2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone) is a chemical UV filter that absorbs UVB and UVA II radiation. Following SCCS safety reassessments citing endocrine disruption potential, the EU has implemented strict restrictions: maximum 6% in sunscreen products, 2.2% in other cosmetic products applied to skin, and 0.5% in body lotions. The transition period for reformulation ended July 2023. Multiple hazard statements (H317 sensitization, H361 suspected reproductive toxicity, H410 very toxic to aquatic life) reflect its challenging safety profile. Its use in cosmetic products now requires careful regulatory compliance verification.

Skin benefits

  • UV filter providing sun protection
  • Absorbs UVB and UVA II radiation
  • Was widely used in sunscreen formulations globally

Known concerns

  • H361 - suspected reproductive toxicity (endocrine disruption)
  • H317 - skin sensitization
  • H410 - very toxic to aquatic organisms
  • Endocrine disruption concerns from SCCS assessment
  • Significant EU use restrictions implemented 2022-2023
  • Banned in Hawaii and other jurisdictions due to coral reef toxicity
