About

This mid-high ethoxylated surfactant has reduced endocrine risk compared to lower variants, but EU regulations continue to restrict its use in cosmetic products.

Nonoxynol-35 is a polyethylene glycol mono(4-nonylphenyl) ether with an average of 35 ethylene oxide units. The elevated ethoxylation substantially mitigates direct endocrine activity and reduces the rate of nonylphenol generation. However, EU cosmetic legislation under REACH Annex XVII (entry 46a) applies a uniform restriction to the nonylphenol ethoxylate class, and Nonoxynol-35 is not exempt. Its aquatic toxicity profile is gentler than lower-ethoxylated homologues.

Known concerns

  • EU REACH Annex XVII restriction in cosmetic products
  • Residual nonylphenyl-derived endocrine concern
  • Aquatic toxicity at trace environmental concentrations
  • Persistence in biological treatment systems
