About
Octoxynol-20 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Octoxynol-20 is a polyethylene glycol ether of 4-tert-octylphenol with an average of 20 ethylene oxide units. In the EU, alkylphenol ethoxylates are under evaluation due to environmental concerns—their degradation products (alkylphenols and shorter ethoxylates) are persistent, bioaccumulative, and suspected endocrine disruptors. No specific EU cosmetic restriction exists, but SCCS has expressed concern regarding long-chain alkylphenol residues in cosmetic products.
Known concerns
- Environmental persistence: degrades to nonylphenol/octylphenol, which are endocrine-disrupting
- Potential residual monomer contamination
- Environmental concern - not readily biodegradable
