About

This high-ethoxylation Nonoxynol has a comparatively safer profile with limited endocrine risk, though EU regulations still prohibit its use in cosmetic products due to the nonylphenyl structural class.

Nonoxynol-30 is a nonionic surfactant of the ethoxylated nonylphenyl ether class with an average of 30 ethylene oxide units. The extended polyoxyethylene chain confers high water solubility and greatly reduces nonylphenol liberation. The EU SCCS has not issued a favorable opinion for nonylphenol ethoxylates in cosmetic products, and REACH Annex XVII (entry 46a) restricts the entire series. Nonoxynol-30 carries the lowest relative aquatic toxicity in this series, yet is still subject to cosmetic prohibition.

Known concerns

  • EU REACH Annex XVII restriction in cosmetic products
  • Residual endocrine risk at environmental levels
  • Trace aquatic toxicity
  • Persistence in aquatic environments
