About

2-isopentenal is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

2-Isopentenal (also called 3-methyl-2-butenal or prenal) is an alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde with a powerful, sharp fruity-green scent used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumery. Alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes are inherently more reactive and potentially more problematic than saturated aldehydes. The source data shows no GHS hazard statements, but unsaturation confers a structural alert for sensitisation and irritation. IFRA guidelines restrict its use concentration. It is not listed in EU Annex restriction lists, but its reactivity profile warrants careful formulation control.

Known concerns

  • Alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde structural alert — potential irritant and sensitiser
  • Irritation potential at high concentrations in formulations
  • IFRA restriction applies to maximum use level
