4-Methoxybenzyl alcohol (anisyl alcohol) is an aromatic alcohol with a sweet, floral, slightly vanillin-like odor. It occurs naturally in several essential oils and is widely used in perfumery for its pleasant scent profile. It is not subject to restriction under EU Regulation 1223/2009 and has been assessed by IFRA as safe for use in fragrance compounds at normal concentrations. Mild skin sensitization has been reported in extreme cases but it is generally well-tolerated.
