About
Butyraldehyde — a small, volatile, flammable aldehyde used as an industrial intermediate. Not an appropriate cosmetic ingredient.
Butyraldehyde (butanal, CAS 123-72-8) is a small, volatile four-carbon aldehyde used primarily as an industrial chemical intermediate for 2-ethylhexanol and other plasticizer precursors. GHS classifications include flammable liquid (H225), acute inhalation toxicity (H332), and serious eye irritation. As a reactive aldehyde it is not appropriate for cosmetic use; IFRA-restricted aldehydes in fragrance are purified, stabilized isomers with established safety data, not bulk butyraldehyde. If this ingredient appears on an INCI decl, it is almost certainly either an error or an unpurified residual and should be red-flagged.
