About
A cationic derivative of cassia gum polysaccharide used primarily as a hair conditioning agent and film-former. Provides substantivity to skin and hair surfaces through cationic charge attraction.
Cassia Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium-modified derivative of cassia (Cassia obtusata or Cassia tora) seed gum polysaccharide. The cationic substitution provides strong adsorption to negatively charged skin and hair surfaces, forming a lubricious, substantive film. EU Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 does not list this ingredient in restriction annexes. As a polysaccharide derivative, it is not expected to penetrate intact skin and has a favorable safety profile, though it may cause slight eye irritation due to its cationic nature.
Skin benefits
- Provides excellent film-forming and conditioning properties
- Improves skin and hair smoothness and substantivity
- Can enhance moisture retention on skin surface
Known concerns
- Mild eye irritation potential due to cationic charge
- May cause build-up on hair with repeated use at high concentrations
