Ceteth-40 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Ceteth-40 is derived from cetyl (hexadecyl) alcohol ethoxylated with approximately 40 moles of ethylene oxide. The extended EO chain makes this ingredient significantly more hydrophilic than Ceteth-14, giving it stronger surfactant and solubilizing properties. EU Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 does not list Ceteth-40 in any restriction annex. As a higher ethoxylated fatty alcohol ether, it has somewhat elevated irritation potential compared to lower-EO variants, particularly in leave-on applications at high concentrations. Well-controlled manufacturing limits residual 1,4-dioxane to safe levels.
Skin benefits
- Strong solubilizing and emulsifying capabilities
- Water-soluble emollient suitable for aqueous formulations
- Improves product clarity in gel and serum systems
Known concerns
- Higher EO chain increases potential for skin irritation in sensitive individuals
- Possible 1,4-dioxane residual
- May facilitate penetration of other ingredients into skin
