About

An amphoteric surfactant used in cleansing formulations with good ecotoxicity profiles and no significant skin sensitization at typical use concentrations.

This ingredient is a hydroxysultaine-type amphoteric surfactant with a mixed alkyl chain (cetyl/lauryl/myristyl) providing mild cleansing and foaming properties. Amphoteric surfactants of this class are widely used in cosmetic cleansers, shampoos, and body washes. The compound has no GHS hazard statements and is not restricted in CosIng. At typical use concentrations (1–10% active matter), it demonstrates low irritancy and good compatibility with other surfactant types. The sulfobetaine headgroup provides good hard water tolerance.

Skin benefits

  • Provides mild, non-drying cleansing in surfactant systems
  • Compatible with anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants
  • Imparts soft after-feel to skin and hair
  • Stable across broad pH range

Known concerns

  • May cause mild eye irritation — avoid direct eye contact in formulas
  • Generally low skin sensitization but test in sensitive-skin formulations
