About

Myristyl Sultaine is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Myristyl sultaine (also called myristyl hydroxysultaine) is an amphoteric surfactant from the sultaine family. Sultaines are known for their exceptionally mild profiles and are often used in combination with anionic surfactants (like SLES) to reduce irritation without sacrificing foam quality. The CIR has assessed alkyl sultaines as safe for cosmetic use. EU CosIng does not list myristyl sultaine in Annex II or III. It is particularly popular in sulfate-free and sensitive-skin formulations.

Skin benefits

  • Foam boosting — creates rich, stable lather
  • Mildness enhancement — reduces irritation from co-surfactants
  • Skin conditioning and softness

Known concerns

  • Generally considered very mild; transient irritation possible at high concentrations
  • Not individually restricted in EU cosmetics
