About
Lysed cellular material from the cultured callus of Cistus × incanus (grey leaf cistus), rich in polyphenolic diterpenes with strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.
Cistus incanus (also called Cistus creticus or grey leaf rockrose) is a Mediterranean shrub known for its exceptionally high polyphenol content, particularly polyphenolic diterpenes such as galloylquinic acids and ellagitannins. Callus culture technology enables standardised, high-yield production of these bioactives without seasonal or geographic variation. The lysate contains the intracellular bioactive compounds released from lysed cells. Cistus extracts have documented in vitro antimicrobial activity against skin-relevant pathogens and are considered safe cosmetic ingredients with no EU restrictions.
Skin benefits
- Exceptionally high polyphenol antioxidant capacity
- Antimicrobial activity against acne-relevant Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus
- Anti-inflammatory properties via NF-κB pathway modulation
- Potential anti-photoageing benefits through UV damage protection
Known concerns
- High polyphenol concentration may cause irritation on sensitive skin
- Strong antioxidant activity can occasionally cause pro-oxidant effects in vitro
