About

Glycereth-20 Stearate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

With an average of 20 ethylene oxide units on the glycereth backbone, this ingredient has substantially higher water solubility than the glycereth-6 laurate, making it suitable for clear or pearlescent formulations. The stearate ester (from stearic acid) provides emolliency and a creamy skin feel. The high EO number means it is fully water-soluble and excellent at stabilizing O/W emulsions. EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 does not restrict glycereth compounds specifically, treating them as standard nonionic surfactants/emulsifiers subject to general purity requirements.

Skin benefits

  • Imparts a rich, creamy opacity and luxurious skin feel
  • Strong water-binding capacity provides humectant-like moisturization

Known concerns

  • High EO content means residual 1,4-dioxane must be controlled below regulated thresholds
  • May cause formulation pH drift in systems sensitive to weakly acidic esters
