About
A fatty acid amide derived from erucic acid that works as a highly effective slip agent and anti-blocking agent in cosmetic and personal care products. Similar to oleamide in safety profile.
Erucamide (cis-13-docosenamide) is the amide of erucic acid, used extensively in cosmetics as a slip agent, viscosity-controlling agent, and anti-foaming agent. While structurally similar to oleamide, erucic acid has been subject to some regulatory scrutiny due to its natural occurrence in mustard and rapeseed oils and potential cardiac concerns when consumed at high dietary levels — however this does not apply to topical cosmetic use. The CIR Expert Panel supports its safety in cosmetic formulations at normal concentrations.
Skin benefits
- Skin conditioning agent
- Improves product texture and slip
- Anti-blocking properties in stick products
Known concerns
- Some regulatory scrutiny regarding erucic acid content in food (not cosmetics)
- May degrade over time in formulations exposed to heat
