About
A triarylmethane dye historically used for its vivid violet colour, now largely banned in cosmetic products due to toxicity concerns.
Basic Violet 1 (Crystal Violet, Gentian Violet) is a triphenylmethane dye. While previously used in some cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications, it is now restricted in the EU under Annex II (for certain applications) and Annex IV (for others with restrictions). It has been associated with DNA-intercalation concerns and is primarily used today in industrial and pharmaceutical (topical antiseptic) contexts rather than cosmetics.
