About
An amphoteric surfactant containing diethanolamine (DEA) that is restricted in the EU due to nitrosamine formation potential.
DEA-cocoamphodipropionate is listed in EU Annex II/411 of the Cosmetics Regulation, meaning it is restricted due to the presence of diethanolamine (DEA). DEA can react with nitrosating agents to form N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA), a suspected carcinogen. The EU requires that DEA itself is not used in cosmetic formulations, and ingredients that release DEA may also be subject to scrutiny. Maximum NDELA levels must be below 50 µg/kg in cosmetic products.
Skin benefits
- Conditions skin and hair
- Produces rich lather

Known concerns
- EU Annex II/411 restricted — DEA content raises nitrosamine formation concern
- Suspected carcinogen (NDELA) on prolonged skin contact
- Not recommended for leave-on products
