About

An amphoteric surfactant/conditioner with a tallow alkyl chain, two hydroxyethyl groups, and a glycine (carboxymethyl) internal salt, providing mild cleansing and good skin compatibility.

Dihydroxyethyl tallow glycinate is an internal salt (amphoteric) where a tallow alkyl (C16-C18) quaternary ammonium is paired with a carboxymethyl (glycine) anion, with two hydroxyethyl groups on the nitrogen. The structure gives mild amphoteric surfactant behavior while retaining some cationic substantivity. EU CosIng shows no Annex II or III restrictions. The dihydroxyethyl groups provide water solubility without ethoxylation. Tallow source raises animal-origin concerns. The glycine internal salt makes the molecule pH-sensitive, performing differently in acidic vs alkaline formulations.

Skin benefits

  • Mild cleansing with amphoteric surfactant behavior
  • Some cationic substantivity for skin and hair conditioning
  • Foam stabilization in combination with anionic surfactants

Known concerns

  • Animal-derived tallow source (vegan/vegetarian concern)
  • Mild skin and eye irritation possible at high concentrations
  • pH-dependent performance may cause variability in formulation
