About
A mild amphoteric surfactant derived from hydrogenated beef tallow, providing good cleansing with low irritation and excellent compatibility with anionic surfactants.
Hydrogenated tallow betaine is a betaine-type amphoteric surfactant using saturated C16-C18 fatty chains from hydrogenated tallow (animal origin). It is structurally similar to cocamidopropyl betaine but with a fully saturated chain profile, reducing susceptibility to oxidation. Not listed in EU Annexes II or III. The ingredient has a long history of safe use in rinse-off formulations. The main concern is the animal-derived tallow sourcing (vegetarian/vegan disclosure) and residual nitrosamine potential if secondary amines are present.
Skin benefits
- Low-irritation cleansing for face and body
- Viscosity-building in surfactant systems
- Synergistic foam enhancement with anionic surfactants
Known concerns
- Animal-derived raw material — may conflict with vegan/vegetarian positioning
- Minor nitrosamine formation potential if improperly preserved
- Possible skin irritation in individuals sensitized to tallow derivatives
