About
A mild amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil fatty acids and PEG-3 sulfosuccinate chemistry, suitable for gentle cleansing formulations including those for sensitive skin.
Disodium cocamido PEG-3 sulfosuccinate is a sulfosuccinate-type surfactant with an amide link to coconut oil-derived fatty acids and an average of 3 ethylene oxide units. Sulfosuccinates are known for their mildness relative to anionic surfactants such as SLS, producing low irritation in corneal assays. The amide link to coconut fatty acids reduces the risk of nitrosamine formation compared to amine oxide derivatives. This ingredient is commonly used in baby care, facial cleanser, and sensitive-skin product formulations.
Skin benefits
- Effective oil-in-water emulsification for gentle cleansing
- Low irritation profile suitable for sensitive-skin formulations
- Good foaming properties with reduced harshness vs. anionic surfactants
Known concerns
- Possible trace diethanolamine (DEA) content from amide formation
- Mild skin barrier disruption possible with overuse at high concentrations
