About

A water-soluble sulfonated derivative of phloretin, the apple polyphenol. More stable than the parent, activity partially retained.

Disodium phloretin disulfonate is a synthetic, water-soluble derivative of phloretin (a dihydrochalcone found in apple bark and leaves). Sulfonation at two positions produces a disodium salt that is much more water-soluble and formulation-stable than free phloretin. Phloretin is studied as a skin antioxidant and is paired with vitamin C in some dermocosmetic brands. The sulfonated derivative has reduced cell uptake and likely reduced intrinsic antioxidant potency, but is easier to incorporate into aqueous formulas. No CIR/SCCS opinion; data on this specific derivative is mostly supplier-generated.
